about

For their latest programme, Jalda Rebling, Hans-Werner Apel and Stefan Maass have brought together pieces of music and contemporary documents from the early 13th to the mid-18th century, and woven them into a loose rainbow of images of German Jewish cultural life. The stations here range from Hassidism in Regensburg, selected songs of the Jewish minnesinger Süsskind von Trimberg, Jewish dances and satirical Christian songs about Jews, thorough to philosophical tracts by Moses Mendelssohn. This compilation of cultural history has never been previously developed musically. The programme shows the close intermeshing of the different worlds of the sacred and profane, both in their fortunate form of German-Jewish symbiosis and their perversion by Christian fanaticism, anti-Semitic persecution and xenophobia. The CD includes a detailed leaflet.
